this month was dedicated to the gods Tezcatlipoca and Huitzilopochtli at the beginning of the rainy season, which saw the culmination of a particularly interesting ceremony to both of these gods and of a very similar nature. in the case of Tezcatlipoca, a youth of good disposition had been kept in idleness and luxury for a period of one year, during which time he was dressed in fine clothes, taught to play the flute and educated in good manners. he was attended to faithfully by eight attendants who never left his side, although he might wander anywhere by day or by night. this youth was treated as the living incarnation of the god Tezcatlipoca and wherever he travelled the people treated him with the reverence due to a god on earth. twenty days before his death on the sacrificial altar, the youth was married to four maidens dressed as goddesses with whom he might enjoy the remaining days of his life. the four maidens had been reared in great luxury specially for this duty and they represented the goddesses of maize, pleasure, salt & water. after five days of feasting, the youth left the company of his wives and departed for the temple. upon his arrival at the temple, the youth climbed the temple steps, breaking a flute with every stride until he reached the top. he was laid upon his back on the altar and the priest cut out his heart with an obsidian knife.
